A CBD topical cream is a cosmetic cream with a CBD ingredient in the formula, made to go on the skin rather than be swallowed. This guide covers how to read the ingredient list, how a cream differs from other formats, how to apply one by the pack directions, and the UK rules that apply. It doesn’t describe effects on the skin or body, and it isn’t medical advice.
Our own CBD topicals are face creams, a soap bar, a hair oil and bath bombs, so this page keeps to creams, which is what most people searching this term are comparing.
What is a CBD topical cream?
It’s a skin cream first. Most are emulsions: water and oils held together by an emulsifier, with humectants such as glycerin, a preservative system and sometimes fragrance. The CBD part is one ingredient among many. In the UK, a product like this is sold as a cosmetic for external use. It isn’t a food supplement, so food rules on CBD don’t apply to it, and it isn’t a medicine.
Reading the ingredients (INCI)
Every cosmetic sold in the UK has to list its ingredients using INCI names. Ingredients above 1% are listed from the largest amount to the smallest; those at 1% or less can follow in any order. That’s why water, written as “Aqua”, is usually first in a cream.
What to look for on a CBD cream label:
- The CBD ingredient. It may appear as “Cannabidiol” or as a Cannabis Sativa extract or oil. Hemp seed oil (“Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil”) is a plant oil and doesn’t in itself indicate added CBD.
- The carrier oils. Plant oils such as jojoba or avocado oil give a cream its feel. A richer cream tends to list more of them, higher up.
- The preservative. Water-based creams need one. Phenoxyethanol with ethylhexylglycerin is a common pairing.
- Fragrance. “Parfum” covers a blend. Named fragrance allergens are listed separately once they pass a set threshold.
If there’s an ingredient you avoid, read every line of the list rather than trusting the front label. A seller should be able to answer questions about any of it.
Creams vs other CBD topicals
“Topical” covers several formats, and they behave differently in the hand:
- Creams and lotions contain water, so they feel lighter and spread easily over larger areas such as the face.
- Balms and salves are water-free blends of waxes and oils. They’re thicker and need warming between the fingers.
- Oils and massage oils are oil only, with no emulsifier.
- Wash-off products such as soap and bath bombs are rinsed away after use.
CBD Armour sells face creams, a soap bar, a hair oil and bath bombs. We don’t sell CBD balms or massage oils at the moment.
How to use a topical: follow the pack, patch test
The directions printed on your product take priority over any general advice. For a face cream that usually means applying a small amount to clean skin and keeping it away from your eyes and mouth.
Before using a new cream for the first time, try it on a small patch of skin, such as the inner arm, and wait a day or two. A patch test with no reaction still doesn’t promise that you’ll never react. Stop using any product that irritates, and ask a pharmacist if a reaction doesn’t settle.
Do not assume sun protection unless an SPF is expressly stated on the label. For storage, go by the pack. Ours say room temperature, out of light and humidity, with a shake before use.
UK rules for cosmetics
CBD cosmetics are for external use and aren’t medicines. In Great Britain, the UK Cosmetics Regulation requires every cosmetic to have a UK-based Responsible Person, a safety assessment before it goes on sale, a notification to the government’s Submit Cosmetic Product Notification (SCPN) service and a full ingredient list on the pack. A cosmetic can’t be presented as treating or preventing a disease; a product sold that way would fall under medicines rules instead. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a skin condition, check with a pharmacist or GP before trying a new product.
FAQs
Is a CBD topical cream the same as a CBD oil?
No. A cream is a cosmetic for the skin and falls under UK cosmetics law. A CBD oil in a dropper bottle is sold as a food supplement and taken by mouth, so food rules apply to it instead. The Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults to limit CBD consumption to no more than 10mg a day. Never swallow a cream.
Does CBD Armour sell a CBD balm?
Not at the moment. Our two face creams list Aqua as their first ingredient, so they’re water-based emulsions rather than wax-and-oil balms, and they come in pump bottles. If you specifically want a balm’s thicker texture, you’ll need to look elsewhere for now. Our cosmetics also include a soap bar, a hair oil and bath bombs, each with its full ingredient list on its product page.
Can I layer a CBD cream with my other skincare?
Start with each product’s own directions, since they override any general rule. Many people put thinner, watery products such as toners or serums on first and finish with a cream, because heavier textures sit on top. Introduce one new product at a time so you can tell which one is responsible if your skin reacts, and stop using anything that irritates.
Choosing a CBD Armour cream
We sell two face creams, both in pump bottles. The CBD day cream is meant for a daytime routine, and jojoba oil is among its plant oils. The CBD night cream is for the evening and has avocado oil in its formula as well as jojoba. Each product page has the full INCI list, the directions and the storage notes, so you can compare them side by side before you choose.
