CBD Shampoo UK: A Buyer’s Guide

A CBD shampoo is an ordinary hair wash with a hemp-derived CBD ingredient added to the formula. This guide shows UK shoppers how to read a CBD shampoo label, what the ingredient list can and can’t tell you, and which practical points to settle before you pay. It’s a buying guide, not medical advice.

We don’t currently sell a CBD shampoo ourselves. If you’d like a CBD hair-care product from us, our CBD hair oil is the one to look at, and the rest of this page explains why.

What is CBD shampoo?

Like any shampoo, it’s a rinse-off cosmetic: a base of water and cleansing agents, plus conditioning ingredients, fragrance and a preservative. The difference is one extra line on the ingredient list, usually a hemp extract or cannabidiol. UK cosmetics are for external use, and a shampoo’s job is to clean hair. A CBD ingredient doesn’t turn it into a medicine, and an honest label won’t suggest it does.

You’ll also see the name hemp shampoo. That can mean a wash made with hemp seed oil, which contains no CBD, so the name alone doesn’t tell you which one you’re holding.

What’s in a CBD or hemp shampoo: reading the label

Turn the bottle over and find the INCI list, the standard ingredient names printed on every cosmetic sold in the UK. Ingredients appear in descending order of how much is in the formula, down to about 1%. Below that they can be in any order.

  • Cannabidiol means CBD itself has been added.
  • Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil is hemp seed oil. It’s a plant oil, not a CBD source.
  • Cannabis Sativa Leaf Extract is an extract from the plant’s leaves. The label won’t show how much CBD it carries unless the brand states it.

CBD amount. Many shampoos don’t print a CBD figure at all. If a brand gives one, note whether it’s per bottle or a percentage, and whether it refers to added CBD or to a whole extract.

Fragrance. “Parfum” can stand for a blend of many components. Fragrance allergens above a set level are named individually, so check those lines if you avoid a particular one.

How to use it: follow the pack

The bottle’s directions come first. Most rinse-off shampoos are used the same way: wet your hair, work in a small amount, rinse well, and keep it out of your eyes. If you’re trying a product for the first time, a patch test on a small area of skin a day or two beforehand is a sensible precaution, though it can’t rule out a reaction later. Stop using any cosmetic that irritates your skin.

Things to check before you buy

  • Lab report. Where a CBD amount is printed, ask whether a certificate of analysis exists for that batch, and check its batch code against your bottle.
  • Ingredients. Read the full INCI list, not just the front of the pack, especially if there are ingredients you avoid.
  • Price per ml. Bottle sizes vary a lot. Divide the price by the volume so you’re comparing like with like.
  • Returns. Read the returns policy before you break the seal. Ours, for example, doesn’t accept change-of-mind returns once a product is unsealed, but faulty, damaged or wrong items are accepted even if opened: see our returns policy.
  • Wording. Be wary of shampoo listings that promise results for your scalp or hair. A cosmetic shouldn’t make medical claims.

FAQs

Is hemp shampoo the same as CBD shampoo?

Not necessarily. A product named after hemp may only contain hemp seed oil, listed as Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil, which has no CBD. If CBD has been added, the INCI list will show “Cannabidiol”. When the front of the pack and the ingredient list seem to disagree, go by the ingredient list or ask the seller.

Does CBD shampoo show up as CBD on the label?

Only if it’s in the formula. Added CBD appears in the INCI list as “Cannabidiol”, while a leaf extract appears under its plant name, Cannabis Sativa Leaf Extract. Neither line tells you the amount, so if a CBD figure matters to you, look for one printed on the pack or ask the brand for it.

Can I use a CBD shampoo with other hair products?

Check each product’s directions first. A shampoo, conditioner and hair oil are separate cosmetics, so follow the pack for each one, apply them in the order their directions suggest, and keep them out of your eyes. If anything irritates, stop using it, and add new products one at a time rather than all at once.

Does CBD Armour sell a CBD shampoo?
