CBD Oil vs Capsules: UK Guide 2026

CBD food supplements come in several formats, including oil and capsules. If you’re weighing up CBD oil vs capsules, the two look different on the shelf and are used in different ways, but both are sold in the UK under the same food rules.

Read on to compare how each format is taken, measured and stored, and what to check on the label before you buy.

What is CBD oil?

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of many compounds found in the cannabis plant, and CBD oil is one product made from it.

CBD oils come in a liquid form. CBD oil comes in a bottle with a dropper, so you measure each serving yourself. Follow the directions and serving size on the label.

What is a CBD capsule?

A CBD capsule holds a set amount of CBD in a shell you swallow. The label shows the mg of CBD per capsule and what the shell is made from.

Our CBD capsules are currently out of stock and back soon.

While they’re unavailable, this guide doesn’t quote a capsule strength. Check the product page for the current details once capsules are back.

CBD Capsules vs CBD Oil: The Main Differences

The main difference is how you take each one.

How is each one taken?

Capsules are swallowed, usually with water. CBD oil is measured with the dropper. For both, follow the serving size on the label.

Use the dropper supplied with the bottle, and keep to the directions printed on each pack rather than general advice you find online.

Measuring a serving

Capsules come pre-measured, so there’s nothing to measure and they’re easy to carry. With oil, you measure each serving with the dropper.

That makes the label the place to start with either format. A capsule pack lists the CBD in each capsule, while an oil bottle lists the CBD in the whole bottle and in each serving the label describes.

Flavour

If you’d rather not taste anything, capsules have no flavour. Our oils come in Raw & Original and Cool & Fresh (mint). The flavour is printed on each bottle’s label, so check it before you buy.

Storing each format

Keep both formats in their original packaging, closed, and out of the reach of children. Follow any storage directions printed on the pack, and check the date printed on the pack before each use.

How much CBD is it safe to take?

The Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults to limit CBD consumption to no more than 10mg a day.

Capsules contain a fixed amount per capsule and oil is measured by the drop, so check the mg per serving on the label against this advice.

Which format suits you: oil or capsules?

It comes down to preference.

Oil may suit you if you prefer:

  • a choice of flavours
  • measuring your own serving

Capsules may suit you if you prefer a pre-measured serving with no flavour.

Neither format is better than the other. They’re different ways of buying the same kind of food supplement, so choose the one that fits how you’d like to use it.

How do I compare CBD oils and capsules?

Whichever format you choose, check these on the label and batch report:

  • the mg of CBD per bottle or per capsule
  • the spectrum: full-spectrum, broad-spectrum or isolate
  • the carrier oil and the full ingredients list, including allergens
  • the batch number, and the batch lab report that matches it
  • an unbroken tamper or hygiene seal, which every CBD Armour product has

Tip 1: Check the legal position

THC and some other cannabinoids are controlled in the UK. A legal CBD product must meet strict conditions on those controlled cannabinoids; see Is CBD legal in the UK?

Tip 2: Check the spectrum

Labels say whether a product is full-spectrum, broad-spectrum or isolate. These describe which plant compounds are kept, not how well a product works.

Tip 3: Check the batch report

Labels and batch reports let you check what’s in a product before you buy. Check that the batch number on the pack matches a batch lab report you can read.

If a detail is missing from the label, or the batch report doesn’t match the pack, contact the seller before you buy.

Final Thoughts on CBD Oil vs Capsules

Whichever format you choose, start with the serving information on the label.

If you take any medicine, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a health condition, speak to a GP or pharmacist before using CBD.
